SATAN CLUB HARTEST
Going by Satan Club for his solo musical output, 'Hartest' is the captivating new offering from guitarist and deathcrash member Matthew Weinberger. The stunning snapshot of a moment in time sees Weinberger delve into the ambience of field recording, playing freely into the Suffolk countryside with a DIY recording set up. He explains: “I wrote this track sometime after recording my first album, and then just sat on it for a while. For ages, it didn’t have a name, but my friend used to call it the ‘epic riff song’. This version was recorded near Hartest, in Suffolk, outside a remote, ‘off-grid’ cabin my partner and I were staying in. The recording is by no means the best, but I like the feel of the take. I just placed the mics on a whim - one so close you can hear all the minute noises my freezing cold fingers make on the guitar as it moves around the strings and the fretboard, and the other so far away it mostly caught bird song and noise. It was so cold as I played, and there were so many birds circling and swooping as I watched. I happened to set up my phone to video as I play, so I caught the take on camera. The video features that take, with some other clips from our time in Hartest - cooking, strolling and listening to the birds.” Despite the chilly physical environment, the result is one that'll leave you warm, fuzzy and hanging on every gentle pluck of the guitar. Satan Club's aptly-titled new album Home Recordings will arrive via Aural Canyon on the 31st of October (spooky). -Holly Mullineaux
